English National Opera Shows in London

The English National Opera (ENO) is a renowned London-based opera company. It is one of London's two leading opera companies (the other being The Royal Opera in Covent Garden), and a resident at the London Coliseum, located in St Martin's Lane. All the productions of ENO are sung in English, and the company has staged every major opera of Puccini, Wagner and Mozart, along with a variety of Verdi's compositions. For decades, it has emphasised opera as a drama instead of letting vocal displays outweigh the dramatic and musical content. As a result, while the company holds exemplary operas, it also presents various new works and plays a crucial role in making them successful. The Formation of the ENO

The roots of ENO traces back to 1931 when Lilian Baylis founded the Sadler's Wells Opera Company. She had been offering theatre and opera concerts to the people of London since 1898. She was focused on giving the audiences the best at pocket-friendly rates. Even today, ENO strictly adheres to the same belief and has become a massive attraction for locals and visitors alike.

The Sadler's Wells Theatre closed during WWII, and the company moved ahead, touring the provinces. In June 1945, ENO returned home for the premiere of Peter Grimes. This show by Benjamin Britten became the most acclaimed British opera. However, Sadler's Wells Opera moved to the London Coliseum in 1968. Six years later, it renamed itself the English National Opera. In 2000, the company initiated a four-year restoration project with the help of the English Heritage, National Heritage Lottery Fund, and several other generous donors. It reopened with a brand new look in 2004. Later, in 2008, it won all the awards available for UK opera - an unimaginable feat!

In 2016, the ENO Orchestra and Chorus won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Performance in an opera. The ENO Chorus also received the International Opera Awards Chorus Category. Today, the company is famous for presenting ground-breaking productions of its old and new repertoire and its spectacular levels of musicals. Get your English National Opera tickets today!
